Granny Smith Apples
According to an article written by Mick Telkamp, written for HGTV outdoor, the Granny Smith Apple was discovered by Maria Ann “Granny” Smith in 1868. It grew out of a compost pile outside her house in Australia. After she passed away, but the Granny Smith Apple strain started to grow under the local farmers. Today it is one of the most popular apples today, with its green colour, lovely tart flavour and white crisp flesh.

Royal Apple Galas
According to an article for Apples & People the Gala apple is a cross made apple between Kidd’s Orange Red and Golden Delicious, selected and named by Don McKenzi in 1965, in New Zeeland. The market loved the flavour and aromas of the apple, but were concerned about the yellowish colour of the apple. A redder Gala apple was then discovered by Bill ten Hove in 1970.
At the time the Queen of England visited the region on a royal tour. She visited the apple farms in the region, traveling to New Zeeland by boat. She received a box of the redder Gala apples and loved it so much she requested another box, thus, the Gala apples earning its new known name, The Royal Apple Galas.

Fuji Apple
The Fuji Apple is a cross breed apple between two American apple varieties. It is named after its origin place, Fujisaki, Japan. It is known for its sweet flavour, crisp texture and dense flesh. The skin of the apple is smooth with a blush red-pink colour. It is known as one of the sweetest and honeyed apples around the world.
The Golden Delicious Apple
J.M Mullins discovered the apple sprouting while fielding on his family farm in West Virginia, according to an article written by Christian Meffert. A couple years later Paul Stark Snr. Took the journey known as the “Trail of the Golden Delicious Apple” to West Virgina as the Stark Brothers Nursery wanted to add a yellow apple to their collection of apples. They brought the rights to sell and produce the apples in 1916. The apple is known today for its sugary and sour taste with its bright yellowish- green colour.
The Cripps Red Apple
The apple devolved in 1973, it is a crossing between Golden Delicious and Lady Williams. It has a yellow undertone and a crimson overtone. It has a juicy, tangy flavour and a firm and textured flesh. It is perfect for baking or eating cold and fresh.
